What does “net” obstacle clearance mean?

The 35 ft net clearance is a conservative, regulatory buffer built into the performance data. It’s derived from gross climb performance (what the aircraft can actually do) and then reduced to account for:

• Pilot technique variability
• Environmental conditions
• Aircraft system tolerances

This reduction is known as the gross-to-net decrement.
