What are the FAA’s lateral obstacle clearance requirements?

Under FAR 121.189(d) and 135.379, the FAA requires that the aircraft’s net takeoff flight path clears all obstacles by:

• At least 200 feet horizontally within the airport boundary.
• At least 300 feet horizontally beyond the airport boundary.

This corridor extends until the aircraft reaches 1,500 feet above airport elevation, marking the end of the takeoff flight path segment 2.
